Overview
This record covers accessibility and safety work in the bathroom: removing the tub wall someone has to climb over, anchoring grab bars where they are actually reached for, and taking the slip out of the floor. Veterans with a service-connected condition may have additional options through the VA on top of what a private contractor can do.

What This Program Covers
The work is built around safety and comfort. Veterans most often ask for:
- A walk-in shower with a low or zero threshold, so there is no tub wall to climb over
- A step-in tub with a door and a seat
- Grab bars set into the wall studs, where you actually reach for them
- Non-slip flooring and a built-in shower seat
- A comfort-height toilet and a hand-held shower head
- Wider doorways and walker or wheelchair access where it is needed

Eligibility Requirements
Most Veterans who move forward can check off this list:
- You served with an Honorable or General Discharge
- You have your DD-214, or you can request a copy
- You own the home and live in it most of the year
- You, your spouse, or a family member in the home has trouble getting in and out of the tub
- Surviving spouses may also be eligible
- A service-connected injury or rating may open more options for you

Official VA Programs
Bathroom safety is the one home project the VA itself funds several ways. Take these to your VA medical center before you pay for anything:
Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA)Up to $6,800 lifetime for medically necessary home alterations — roll-in showers are named in the benefit. A VA physician prescribes the work and you file VA Form 10-0103 through the Prosthetic and Sensory Aids office at your VA medical center. Veterans without a qualifying service-connected condition may still get up to $2,000, and renters can use it with the landlord's notarized approval.Special Home Adaptation (SHA) grantUp to $25,350 in fiscal year 2026 to adapt a permanent home, for qualifying conditions such as loss or loss of use of both hands, severe burns, or certain breathing injuries.Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grantUp to $126,526 in fiscal year 2026 to buy, build, or change a permanent home, for the most serious service-connected disabilities. The grant can be used up to six times across your lifetime.Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA) grantAdapts a family member's home you are living in for a time — you apply under SAH or SHA rules, and you do not have to own the house.
