Debt Relief Assistance Program

This is a debt resolution program, not a loan. Licensed providers work on what you already owe on credit cards, medical bills, and personal loans — and it costs you $0 up front to find out which options you qualify for.

Overview

This record covers unsecured debt: credit cards, medical bills, and most personal loans. Licensed providers review what you owe and lay out the options, which usually come down to consolidating everything under one payment or working toward settling the balances for less than the full amount. You do not need to own a home to use it.

What This Program Covers

Licensed providers review what you owe and lay out the choices:
  • Credit card balances, medical bills, and most personal loans
  • One monthly plan instead of many separate payments
  • Programs that work toward settling balances for less than the full amount
  • Consolidation options that put everything under one payment
  • A clear timeline, so you know roughly how long the plan runs
  • The calls from collectors handled by the provider, not by you
03

Eligibility Requirements

Most Veterans who qualify can check off this list:
  • You served with an Honorable or General Discharge
  • You have unsecured debt such as credit cards, medical bills, or personal loans
  • You are behind, or you are current but the balances are not going down
  • You have some monthly income to put toward a plan
  • Spouses and surviving spouses can review options too
Nothing about carrying debt says anything about your character. Plenty of Veterans got there from one deployment, one layoff, or one hospital stay.

Official VA Programs

The VA only manages debts owed TO the VA — overpayments and copay balances. For everything else the official help is thin, which makes these three entries matter:
VA debt managementIf part of what you owe is a VA overpayment or a VA copay balance, the VA has its own relief options — waivers, compromise offers, and payment plans. Settle that lane with the VA directly before any private program touches it.Your County Veterans Service OfficerFree help checking whether benefits you never claimed — a disability rating increase, a property tax exemption — could free up money every month. That is debt relief nobody charges for.Nonprofit credit counselingNonprofit counselors review your budget at no charge. They are a fair second opinion to put next to any settlement plan before you sign it.
