Paperwork
What You Will Be Asked For
You do not need any of this to look. You will need most of it to finish.
DD-214Your discharge paperwork. It proves your service and your discharge type. Discharged recently? Pull it from milConnect. Everyone else requests it free from the National Archives — online through eVetRecs, or by mailing Standard Form 180. A surviving spouse, parent, child, or sibling can request it for a deceased Veteran.
Proof of residenceA utility bill, mortgage statement, or tax notice showing the home is yours and you live in it.
Certificate of EligibilityOnly for VA-backed loan options. Approved lenders can pull it for you in minutes once they have your service details.
VA award letterOnly if you have a service-connected rating. It can open extra options and can waive certain fees.
